The Seattle memorial immediately after the 9/11 attacks drew tens of thousands of
people to Seattle Center, site of the 1964 World's Fair and Space Needle. It
was a very solemn memorial with people quietly reading the notes and observing the
turn-out.
Originally scheduled for 2 days, this event went on for a week and had thousands
of visitors. We visited on September 15, 2001.
I grew up outside New York City - my family traveled there from time to time, and
I was around when the World Trade Center was built in the late 1960's and early
1970's. I've been in and atop the towers several times. When 9/11 happened,
it hit a deep and personal chord in my soul. I was numb and thought I was dreaming.
I sat in front of the TV from 8:30am until midnight, Pacific time (by the time I
had awoken that day, the towers were already down). I cannot believe that I won't
be able to take my children there. I suppose the new tower(s) will be their version
of my WTC.
